The company follows the “Toyota
Way,” focusing on lean, standardized
practices. Mercury Marine recently introduced a bevy of engines, including a revamped line of Optimax direct injection
2-strokes. Plus, the company brought in
what Mackey says is world-class talent —
employees from around the globe with
experience in a variety of industries.
But Mackey says the journey is not
yet over. He plans to continue to hone
manufacturing practices and product
development, while also going ahead
with expansion plans. The company, a
division of Brunswick Corp., already
has 3,500 employees in the United
States and 7,000 worldwide, with
plants in China, Japan and Mexico.
Mackey, 59, came to Mercury from
Witco Corp., where he served as
executive vice president. He replaced
former president George W. Buckley,
who was then promoted to CEO of parent company Brunswick Corp., a position now held by Dustan C. McCoy.
